Altar EGO” (Expanding God’s Outreach)
Quilters by Edith George

Since 1991, a quilt has been made and offered for sale each year at the November Bazaar either in a drawing or in a silent auction. It all began when members “Dode” Wagner saw the need to utilize the donations of fabric that members had brought in for various uses. A group of UMW members gathered to make plans, select a quilt pattern and get started.
The first quilt was “Cathedral Windows” a pattern that is pieced and quilted as you go. Working at home on the blocks then joining all together were Helen LeMar, Barbara Gayler, Lilas Dieter and

Edith George.
By 1992, the quilt pattern, Wedding Wreath, had been selected and was pieced and quilted and offered in that year’s Bazaar. Each year since, a quilt has been prepared and sold. At least 9 quilts during that time have been quilted and sent to the Festival of Sharing to be auctioned and money used for Church World Service.

The quilters meet each Wednesday at 1:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall where special lighting and storage was designed by Mark Burnsides when remodeling took place in the early 90’s. New quilters are always welcome, the most recent being Joyce Farmer, who joined regulars Della Rhoades, Esther Minter, Martha Kinman, Margueritte Carmichael and Edith George. In past years expert quilters Dode Wagner, Marie Barnes, Evelyn Birkenholz, Velma Kinman, Doris McDonald and

Phyllis Robertson were weekly helpers. Irma Lee Wilson and Barbara Swink have helped cut and sewn blocks together for several quilts. The 2011 and 2012 Bazaar quilts have been pieced by our youngest member, Cathy George, giving a head start on next year’s quilt.

For several years, the sale of tickets has been organized by Marilyn Scott. The UMW is grateful to all who have contributed in any way to the sale and purchase of tickets for the quilts.
